The stage was set: two exhausted and desperate soldiers were about to go into battle against the demon mountain.

The high camps

When Mallory and Irvine departed Camp IV, two higher camps were already in place, pitched by Norton’s and Somervell’s parties of 3 and 4 June, and presumably provisioned with food, bedding and at least some items of equipment. It was therefore feasible for Mallory and Irvine to carry the maximum quantity of oxygen, and the minimum of food and personal items, as Odell would testify:

‘At 8.40 [am] they were ready to start, and I hurriedly ‘snapped’ them as they were loading up with the oxygen apparatus. Their personal loads consisted of the modified apparatus with two cylinders only [each] and a few other small items such as wraps and a food ration for the day, amounting to not more than perhaps 25 lb [each].

… The eight porters, who accompanied them from Camp IV, carried provisions, bedding, and additional oxygen cylinders, but of course [sic] no breathing apparatus for their own use.’3
